I agree the open dialog isn't really useful, I always use the 'Recently opened' menu item to open another repository.
However, opening the last opened repo isn't that nice if it's a big repository. I think something like a welcome screen with the last opened repositories would be nicer. I'm not sure when I'll be able to implement that though :)
