Commits not showing up after invalid characters

Reported by Leetcat | January 14th, 2017 @ 01:59 AM

System Information:

Component of GitX - history-view
GitX version 0.7.1
git version 2.8.4 (Apple Git-73)
MacOS X version 10.11.6 (15G1212)

Summary:

GitX seems to stop loading commits after it encounters illegal characters

Steps to reproduce:

  1. clone git repo https://github.com/SonarSource/sonarqube
  2. Then load gitx with history-view
  3. Notice that history only goes back to sha: b255fc14d5f0a41f21039cdaf231c5ab3d717a07, and the commit message is only partially there

Expected Results:

Expect to see git history back to Mon, 06 Sep 2010.

Actual Results:

History stops at 12 Oct 2015

Notes:

Further investigation shows that there were non normal characters put in the commit message.
Go to "https://github.com/SonarSource/sonarqube/commit/b255fc14d5f0a41f210...; and you can see the chracters in the title.

Possibly the same as ticket: https://gitx.lighthouseapp.com/projects/17830/tickets/264-commit-me...

    I have developed a work around for invalid characters, for research purposes.
    It is to look at messages without need to maintain hash information.

    Using python to rewrite all gitx commit message

    import os
    import sys
    import string

    # Usage Example.
    # git filter-branch -f --msg-filter "python /location/of/script.py" -- --all

    commit_id = os.environ["GIT_COMMIT"]
    message   = sys.stdin.read()

    def strip_non_ascii(string_to_strip):
        printable = set(string.printable)
        strip_string = filter(lambda x: x in printable, string_to_strip)
        return strip_string

    message_clean = strip_non_ascii(message)

    print message_clean

    Then you can open Gitx and view the whole history.

    Approval rules are stricter on Windows than on whatever other gadgets, that is the reason at times you should rename documents when you download them from the cloud. When you endeavor to make, rename or spare records, two basic blunders may happen that will keep your document from matching up: invalid characters and impacting filenames. Eliza Coupe Jacket

    Windows makes use of NTFS in Windows XP and later for document structures, and some might be brief to blame that as the problem, however, it's now not. This stems from early MS-DOS days wherein all these characters like area et cetera have a that means. They still do today, however the cutting-edge NT Windows Kernel can distinguish between if its a record, command, listing, and so forth. Theoretically, it should not be a hassle, but it nonetheless is. Celebrity Jackets
